Sometimes I dislike being a linguist. I was quite sick for the past 3 days, and even though I was so out of it and r and tired and groggy, my mind still jumped at any mention of one of the modals that I’m working on. It’s important to understand in what kind of contexts modals occur. Modals in English, are ambiguous out of context. Most modals in Javanese I don’t think are ambiguous, but then, it seems that a few are.

So when the father said: “awakmu kudu istirahat total, You have to take a total break” and in my mind I didn’t think about the “resting” part, all I could think about….this is a good context where you can use KUDU…. GO AWAY modals! I want to sleeeeeeep.
