Leaving for some (fresh) air.

Last night (Thursday, Nov 4th) there was a huge explosion at 11pm and again at around 2am. As I went to bed, it was raining, and there seemed to be extra loud thunder that was shaking the house, but maybe that was Merapi.

News reports say that there were pyroclastic clouds (hot clouds of gas) travelling to up to 13km! I live 28km from the crater.  It’s too close for me. Many people were seriously burned and and many others died; BBC says that up to 49 people have died now!  And there is more and more ash. I’m even wearing a mask in the house. It looks like a haunted house outside….

The pictures in this post are from this morning.  It’s time to leave Yogya. I’m taking the overnight train to Jakarta tonight for some better air, albeit polluted, but at least ash-free.  For the people staying: Jangan menyerah.

good plan to leave. On the news this morning they said the town that was “baked” was 13 K from Merapi, which made me uneasy for you. At least leaving now you are assured safe passage to Jakarta before things get crazy, though I hope for the sake of Yogya’s residents that it doesn’t get crazy. I’ve been thinking (ok fine, worrying) about you a lot lately with all the volcano action and I’m really really glad you’re ok. Its is one hell of a ‘welcome to Indonesia’ you’ve gotten so far! ;)

At the bike workout on Saturday morning, we listened to the great CD you prepared for us last year. Everyone was happy that you were safe in Jakarta! Take care and keep on giving news! Jacques
